Two suspected drug traders were killed in a gunfight with police at Bagmara in Khulna city early Wednesday.

With this, the number of deaths stood at 170 across the country since May 12.

The deceased were identified as Raju, 26, son of Mohammad Babul, a resident Bagmara, and Manik Kha, 30, son of Sultan Sheikh, a resident Mistiripara in the city.

Sumendu Kumar, SI of Kotwali Police Station, said a team of police arrested Raju and Manik from Dhaka and brought them to Khulna on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, police alongwith the duo conducted a drive in the area around 3:30am to nab their associates. 

Sensing presence of the police, the criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back for self-defence.

Later, police recovered the bodies of Raju and Manik but others managed to flee the scene.

Police also recovered a pipe gun, two bullets and 200 Yaba pills from the spot.

The duo was wanted in several cases including of murder, drugs and extortion, police said.

Five policemen were also wounded during the gunfight.
