Awami League candidate Md Jahangir Alam Jahangir wins Gazipur city polls: Unofficial results
GAZIPUR: Awami League candidate Md Jahangir Alam has won the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayoral polls by a big margin, according to unofficial results.
Jahangir bagged 4,00,010 votes while his rival BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker got 1,97,611 votes in the polls, Returning Officer at the makeshift EC office installed at Gazipur Bangataj Auditorium also Regional Election Officer (Dhaka) Rakib Uddin Mondol told Banglanews.
However, no formal announcement was made from the temporary announcement center set of the Election Commission, till filing this report.
The voting began in 425 centers at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm across the municipality on Tuesday (June 26). However, voting was suspended in nine polling centers due to irregularities.
According to Returning Officer Tareq Ahmed, seven for mayoral post, 256 for councilor posts, 84 for reserved posts for women contested in the polls.
“A total of 57.02 per cent votes were casted in the election. A total of 6,48,749 voters casted their votes,” said Rakib Uddin Mondol.
“Of the total votes, 6,30,111 are legal as 18,638 votes have been scrapped,” he added.
Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) were used in six polling centers.
“This win belongs to the residents of Gazipur, this win belongs to the ‘green city’. I wish to make this city a ‘green city’,” Jahangir told reporters at the night.
Terming all the allegations over the voting ‘baseless’, he said that the voting was held in fair manner. He conveyed greetings to everyone including the Gazipur residents and the EC, for holding a fair election.
