Veteran painter Syed Jahangir remembered
On the occasion of 84th birth anniversary of veteran painter and former director of Fine Art, Bangladesh Art Academy Syed Jahangir, a remembrance ceremony was held in Dhanmondi's Gallery Chitrak premises on last Saturday, 2nd November. Family members, fans and colleges attended this ceremony and reminisce on different aspects of Syed Jahangir's versatile life. Thousands of memories of those 84 years come up on their speeches.
Speakers highlighted his creations and contribution to art. They said at the time that, Syed Jahangir will survive through his art of creation. On directions of Md. Monir Hossain, Director of Gallery Chitrak, Sheikh Afzal spoke at the beginning. At this time he said, "He loved peoples very much.
He was easily distinguished from all others by his strong personality. He has made many contributions to the arts in Bangladesh." Syed Junayed, a family member of Syed Jahangir said, we ten brothers and sisters grew up near uncle. After the death of our father, uncle never let us understood the lack of a father. He is the source of my every work. Art critic Professor Moinuddin Khaled said in his speech, Syed Jahangir was everyone's favorite.
Losing people like him an irreparable loss to the country. Today people like him were desperately needed to save the art and the artist. Professor Nisar Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, said that Syed Jahangir was a very funny and passionate man.
He had the power to merge with everyone. He could change himself according to his position. In presidential speech, Sheikh Shafi Ahmed said, First of all, he is a good person, then he is an artist. He enjoyed life. He had the extraordinary ability to make people close and add to his side. Syed Jahangir was born on January 1, 1935, in Tetulia village in Tala Upazila of Satkhira.
After working as a professional painter for almost 22 years, he joined Academy of the Arts as the Department head of Arts. Nature and season change was one of the characteristics of his paintings.
The names of his famous exhibitions and series are 'Attar Ujjibon', 'Ullash', 'Dhoni', and 'Ajana Onnesa'. He received the Ekushey Medal in the year of 1985. He also received special honors of Charusilpi Sangsad in 1992, Michael Madhusudan Award in 2000 and Shashibhushan in 2005. He died on 29th December 2018 at the age of 83.
