Vandalising Bagha Jatin's statue: Detained principal files case
Bagha Jatin Degree College principal on Friday filed a case under the Special Powers Act 1974 regarding the vandalising the statue of anti-British revolutionary leader Bagha Jatin at Kumarkhali in Kushtia.
However, police detained him earlier in connection with the incident.
Four people including principal Harun-ar-Rashid were detained for questioning in connection with vandalising the statue of Bagha Jatin, at Bagha Jatin Degree College on Friday.
They were taken to the Kumarkhali police station for questioning.
They were Kaya Bagha Jatin Degree College's president Advocate Nizamul Huq Chunnu, principal Harun-ur-Rashid, night-guard Khalilur Rahman no. 1 Koya Union Jubo League president Anisur Rahman.
Awami League backed Nizamul Huq Chunnu earlier served as upazila vice-chairman.
Kumarkhali Police Station OC Mojibur Rahman said Principal Harun-ar-Rashid filed a case against unnamed folks under the Special Powers Act 1974 in connection with vandalising the statue of Bagha Jatin at Koya Bagha Jatin College premises.
Earlier, miscreants vandalised the statue of anti-British revolutionary leader Bagha Jatin installed at Kaya College in Kumarkhali of Kushtia sometime after Thursday midnight, just two weeks after vandalising the under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the same district town.
They smashed the nose plus some parts of the proper cheek of the statue during the night, police said.
Locals said they found the statue of Bagha Jatin, installed at the college or university premises, smashed on Friday morning. Then they informed police about the problem.
Kushtia additional superintendent of police Atiqul Islam Atique said, on information, a team of police visited the location to inspect the problem.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rajibul Islam Khan said the miscreants broke some portions of the face and nose of the statue. "We've succeeded to arrest the culprits after vandalising Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's under-construction sculpture in Kushtia town, and we'll also be succeded to learn the persons responsible for smashing Bagha Jatin's statue."
Kumarkhali Police Station's OC Mojibur Rahman said police went to the spot getting information from the locals at about 11:00am. "Different departments of the administration like the intelligence agency of Kushtia Police have previously started working on the problem. Those people who are responsible will be brought to justice as quickly as possible," he said.
Meanwhile, obtaining information, Kushtia deputy commissioner Md Aslam Hossain, Police Super SM Tanveer Arafat and additional district magistrate Sirajul Islam visited the area of occurrence at Kaya College. A three-member probe committee has been formed with additional deputy commissioner as convener to research the matter.
It could be mentioned that Jatindranath Mukherjee, or Bagha Jatin [Born: 7 December 1879 - Died: 10 September 1915), was a freedom fighter. Jatin was born in village Kaya under Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia. In 1900, Jatin married Indubala Banerjee of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia. He died in 1915 at age 35.
