United Hospital gets notice for death of patient 'due to negligence'
Legal notice has been served on United Hospital at Gulshan in Dhaka for the death of an individual due to negligence.

Following a death of Mahmuda Khanam, 75, her son Dr Ziauddin Haider sent the legal notice through Supreme Court legal professional Golam Mostofa Shahin by an email on Thursday.

The attorney said United Hospital's managing director Faridur Rahman Khan and ceo Md Faizur Rahman were requested to take steps seeking a conclusion of showing negligence in the treating patient and making indecent behaviour with her relatives.

The legal notice in addition has mentioned that if an explanation isn't received within 15 days, legal action will be taken according to laws.

Dr Ziauddin Haider, an expatriate residing in Cambodia, is working as a professional physician on the planet Bank Group.

In his notice, Dr Ziauddin Haider said pneumonia was detected in her mother's body on April 5 last and oxygen began to fall in her blood. Later, she was taken to a clinic at Uttara and arrangement was designed to give her oxygen. As her blood samples tested coronavirus negative, she was admitted to the ICU of United Hospital at nighttime on April 12. 

Patients are often given oxygen through ventilators if the rate of oxygen within their blood falls below 50 %. However the United Hospital authorities released her from the hospital hurriedly on April 14 though she was under life support. Later, she was admitted to Bangladesh-Kuwait Moitree Hospital and died on April 23 while she was undergoing treatment there.

Dr Ziauddin said the United Hospital authorities called in his brothers on April 14 and told them that the "patient Mahmuda Khanam would need to be shifted as she was found coronavirus positive in her second test."

"Despite repeated requests of the relatives of patient, the United Hospital authorities forced my brothers to shift Mahmuda Khanam to Kuwait Bangladesh Moitree Hospital," he said.

In his notice, Dr Ziauddin further alleged that his mother died due to immoral and unlawful decision of the United Hospital authorities. "It had been totally unacceptable to refer a patient on life support to another hospital without adequate arrangements. It was a murder," he said.
