UN to mobilise global support to get rid of Rohingya crisis: Guterres
Secretary-General of the US Antonio Guterres has stated the UN will continue steadily to stand with Bangladesh and mobilise worldwide support to collectively address the Rohingya crisis and have Myanmar to create a congenial environment for Rohingya repatriation.
He thanked the federal government of Bangladesh for helping the mandate of his office and sought Bangladesh's continued cooperation along with his Particular Envoy on Myanmar to mobilise even more international assistance towards a long-lasting remedy to the Rohingya crisis, reports UNB.
He recently wrote a good letter to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen expressing deep gratitude to Bangladesh for hosting the Rohingya people who fled atrocities and persecution found in Myanmar.
The Secretary-General assured that the UN has renewed its advocacy and support in the Rakhine Condition and would continue to engage with Myanmar towards creating a conducive environment for the sustainable return of the Rohingyas.
Through any office of the Special Envoy and other UN mechanisms, the UN would continue to work towards creating conducive conditions for come back, including full implementation of the suggestions of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, to locate a durable solution to the crisis, the Secretary-General said.
The Secretary-General has sent the letter in response to Dr Momen's new year message to him where the Foreign Minister stressed, amongst others, a far more robust and active role of the UN for the commencement of repatriation and a enduring solution to the crisis.
