Swechchhasebak League leader hacked dead
A Swechchhasebak League leader was hacked to death in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur in an election violence on Monday.

Victim Jony Talukdar, 25, was the vice president of No-8 Halta Gulishakhali Union Swechchhasebak League.  He was the son of Hatem Ali of Kabutarkhali village.

Mathbaria police OC MR Shawkat Hossain said rivals attacked Jony near a water body at Kabutarkhali at about 7:45am.

They hacked Jony with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.

On information, police rescued Jony and whisked him off to the upazila health complex.

The injured was, later, shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died at about 1pm, the OC said.

Meanwhile, a person has been detained in connection with the attack, he added.

Family members claimed Jony Talukdar was working for independent Upazila Parishad chairman candidate Riaz Uddin Ahmed in the upazila election scheduled to be held on March 31.

They also accused Awami League supporters for the killing.

But, upazila AL president and pourasava mayor Rafiquddin Ahmed Ferdous denied the allegation .
