RPO amendment draft on EVM usage sent to Law ministry
With an aim to use Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the national polls, the Election Commission (EC) has sent the amendment draft of Representation of the People Order (RPO) to Law Ministry.
EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the draft was sent to the ministry on Monday (September 3).
He said the draft will be sent to the cabinet after ministry’s vetting. Once okayed by the cabinet, it will be passed in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad session.
According current RPO, there is no provision to use EVMs in parliamentary elections. The EC wants to incorporate the usage of the voting machine in the RPO through amendment.
The Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Monday told reporters that the usage of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the general election depends on the capability, training, law and consent of political parties. In that case, EVM will be used in 25 seats.
