Over 90pc Boro paddy harvested
Farmers in Bangladesh have already harvested 90 per cent of the Boro paddy in the current season, dispelling worries that the impending cyclonic storm could experience a major influence on the development of the largest crop and hurt meals reliability, the agriculture ministry said.

"At present, we don't have a large portion of Boro paddy in the field. But, we happen to be encouraging farmers to slash their crops as fast as possible," stated Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque.

Concerns grew as a good low-pressure region is brewing more than the north Andaman Ocean and the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Section on Saturday.

This could intensify right into a cyclonic storm and more likely to generate landfall through the Odisha-West Bengal-Khulna coast around May 26, it said.

About 50 % of Boro rice were to be harvested by the next week of May, which is when the monsoon season is expected to start, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its latest Grain and Feed update on Bangladesh.

Cyclone Amphan strike the united states on May 20 this past year and influenced Boro paddy in the fields, traveling up the prices of the staple found in the domestic market.

"The storm wouldn't normally cause much harm to the crop as farmers harvested most of the paddy," said Md Mesbahul Islam, senior secretary of the agriculture ministry.

Farmers planted paddy on 48.83 lakh hectares this season and harvested 90 % of the crop, regarding to an estimate of the Section of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

Crop collection in the key belts of Boro paddy, including haor areas, has already been completed. The harvesting of some overdue varieties recently commenced in some areas, like the Rajshahi place, where there will be no major impression of the approaching cyclone, Islam added.

Md Asadullah, director-general of the DAE, said his workplace had advised farmers to harvest all of the paddy that had matured.

There is most paddy in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Manikganj which has not been harvested but, he added.

According to Islam, the yield of Boro paddy will be higher this season, and a precise calculation will be available once all of the paddy is minimize and collected.

Compared to this past year, Boro has been grown on about 130,000 hectares even more land this year, stated the agriculture minister in a press release yesterday.

Furthermore, the cultivation of hybrid paddy has expanded to about 3.26 lakh hectares, Razzaque said.

"Combined with the expanded location and the hybrid cultivation, we expect the creation of rice to come to be 10-12 lakh tonnes a lot more than previous year's. From the info I got from the discipline, I check out that the farmers 've got a great yield, and they are happy."

"The cost of paddy can be good. Our aim has been realized," the minister said.

The full total production of the irrigation-based crop may go past two crore tonnes during this year's harvest, up from the previous year's 1.96 crore tonnes approximated by the Bangladesh Bureau of Figures.

Boro paddy makes up about nearly 55 % of gross annual rice production.

The USDA said climate would be vital that you monitor.

"Farmers were overdue to plant this year's Boro rice crop, therefore the upcoming monsoon time could dramatically impact this year's harvest."

The US agency said Boro rice production might decline by 1.5 % year-on-year to at least one 1.90 crore tonnes in today's harvesting season as a result of the recent heatwave and pest attacks.

Because of heat, key industry contacts believe it may be difficult for Bangladesh to achieve the target of making 2.05 crore tonnes of this grain this season, it added.
