Messi to skip Barcelona’s final game of Spanish season
Lionel Messi may have played his final game for Barcelona.
The Argentina star has been given permission to miss the team’s final game of the Spanish league season - at Eibar on Saturday - so he can have extra rest prior to the Copa América, Barcelona said Friday.
Messi didn’t coach on Friday. Barcelona is out of contention for the group title.
His contract expires towards the end of this time, and he hasn’t given a sign he will sign a new one.
The 33-year-old Messi has been with Barcelona for his whole career, but he tried to leave following 2019-20 season, saying he wasn’t pleased with the direction the club was taking.
The Copa América starts June 13, when Argentina assumes Chile.
Barcelona is third found in the Spanish little league, seven points behind innovator Atletico Madrid and five in back of Real Madrid. The staff could get overtaken by fourth-place Sevilla, which can be two points back before a home meet against Alaves. Last-place Eibar was already relegated.
