Man dies, 15 hurt in clash between hawkers and extortionists

An alleged extortionist was killed and 15 others were injured in a clash between hawkers and extortionists at Tongi in Gazipur Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Omar Faruque, 35, reports BSS.

Police and locals said Omar Faruque was forced to realise extortion from different shops on the footpath in Cherag Ali area in Tongi at about 7.45 pm last night. At one stage, the hawkers swooped on the extortionists, leaving 15 of them, including Faruk, injured.

Critically injured Faruque, son of Abdul Hai, hailed from Suratranga area of Auchpara in Tongi, was rushed to the Tongi Shaheed Ahsanullah Master Govt Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.

The other injured were admitted to different hospitals.

“Omar Faruque was involved with extortion for long,” said Officer-in- Charge (OC) of Tongi Model Police Station M Kamal Hossain.

The body was sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College for autopsy, the OC added.

A case was filed with Tongi Model police station in this connection.
