Killing people “by govt” now order of the day, alleges BNP
BNP on Wednesday alleged that killing people “by the government” has now become an order of the day as it treats people as ‘animals and birds’.
“Gunshots were fired at people indiscriminately in Bhola…it seems they (govt) treat people like animals and birds. They used to open fire on any public gathering as killing people has become a normal for them,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He came up with the remarks while speaking at a protest programme in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office against the killing of four people in Bhola’s Borhanuddin upazila.
As part of their countrywide programmes, leaders and activists of BNP’s Dhaka south units and different associate bodies brought out a procession in Nayapaltan area.
Rizvi said people in Bhola’s Borhanuddin upazila gathered to hold a rally exercising their constitutional right, but law enforcers ‘without any reason’ attacked the rally, killing four people and injuring over a hundred ones.
“This regime has destroyed democracy and snatched the freedom of speech. We’re observing programmes across the country protesting the Bhola killings. We all need to take to the streets to register our protests against such an incident,” he added.
Voicing anger over the police firing on common people, the BNP leader said the government is resorting to repressive acts to suppress people so that they cannot raise their voice against the government’s ‘misdeeds and anti-state’ acts.
Rizvi said the government has kept their chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail to turn Bangladesh into a subservient country through ‘snatching’ people’s democratic and basic rights.
He called upon the people of all walks of life to be vocal and wage a strong movement to free Khaleda Zia from jail and ‘restore’ democracy in the country.
On Monday, BNP announced to stage protest programmes in all metropolitan cities and districts today against the Bhola violence.
Four people were killed and about 200 others injured on Sunday in a clash between police and demonstrating locals in Borhanuddin upazila, demanding the punishment of a youth for allegedly hurting religious sentiments on Facebook.
Police and locals said messages containing derogatory remarks about Allah and Prophet Muhammad were sent to several persons from a hacked Facebook ID of Biplob Chandra Shuvo, triggering widespread protests.
