This is not for the first time BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has got the facility of having a maid with her in the jail, she had domestic maid with her during her imprisonment enforced by the military-backed caretaker government.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this at a press conference at her Ganobhaban residence on Monday afternoon. The press conference was arranged to pief the media about the outcome of her recent official visit to Italy and Vatican City.

Sheikh Hasina said, “I was kept in a dirty house while my imprisonment during the caretaker government. Khaleda Zia was kept in the parliament Speaker’s residence. This Fatema (who is now accompanying Khaleda in jail) was given to her that time also.”

Responding to a query whether allowing a domestic help for a prisoner is ultra vires to the Constitution, the Prime Minister said, “Not that much (facility) given, a house maid only.”

“Every one cannot entitle that. There may be some lucky persons, who avail it.”

Reminiscing those days of her imprisonment, the Prime Minister said, “I was waiting for food. My companion, I mean, neighbour (Khaleda Zia) was yet to arrive. I was provided with a chef for cooking meal for me whom I used to give my excess food.”

When (a few days later) the neighbour (Khaleda) came, my excess meal had to be given to Fatema, depriving the chef. Since then, I took less food and put aside share of my food for the chef.”
