Integration of climate risk assessment tools in dev planning emphasized

Speakers in a dissemination workshop emphasized on integration of Climate Risk and Vulnerability Screening Assessment (CRVA) tools in development planning and project approval process to minimize the loss due to climate change.
CRVA tools have been developed by the Programming Division of the Bangladesh Planning Commission under a project titled “Action on Climate Change in South Asia” supported by Asian Development Bank, said a press release.
Programming Division organized the workshop in a city hotel on Wednesday to disseminate the knowledge products including the CRVA tools and guidelines developed during the project period.
Md. Ziaul Islam, Senior Secretary of the Planning Division and also member of Programming Division chaired the session while ADB Country Director Manmohan Parkash attended as guest of honour.
The workshop was also addressed by Md. Asif-uz-Zaman and Shamima Nargis, members of planning commission as special guests. Syeedul Haque, Chief of Programming Division delivered welcome address.
It was mentioned in the workshop that the project established a multi hazard assessment method for risk screening, developed district-wise risk atlases on ten hazards, drafted a cost–benefit analysis framework for climate proofing development projects, and formulated guidelines to structure and updated the Hazard Exposure Vulnerability and Risk (HEVR) database.
In her presentation, Dr. Nurun Nahar, Deputy Chief of the Programming Division, emphasized establishing Climate Risk Screening System for Mainstreaming Climate Changed Adaptation into National Development Budgeting Activities.
More than one hundred representatives from different ministries, international development agencies, research organization, NGOs and academic institutions participated in the workshop.
