I won’t resign: Jahangirnagar VC
Jahangirnagar University’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam on Tuesday dubbed the ongoing student movement demanding her ouster baseless and reiterated that she would not quit.
“The movement demanding of my resignation is baseless, so I will not step down,” Prof Islam told a press conference at her office in the afternoon, UNB reports.
She is the first woman to serve as the vice-chancellor at a public university in Bangladesh. She was reappointed last year.
In the afternoon, agitating teachers and students, under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’, formed a human chain at the Central Shaheed Minar premises around 1pm.
Tuesday was the closing day of JU admission test for academic session 2019-20.
The demonstrators also called for strike for the next two days. All administrative activities and classes will remain suspended but examinations will take place as per schedule.
Adib Arif, joint convenor of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Odhikar Parishad of JU unit, said there had been media reports about the “corruption of the VC”.
“We’ve demanded judicial inquiry but nothing has been done so far,” he said.
