Gun attack leaves 24 dead in central Mexico
Gunmen attacked a drug rehabilitation centre in central Mexico killing in least 24 persons and leaving seven wounded on Wednesday, community authorities said.

According to preliminary information, the attackers “entered the picture, forced (the victims) on to the surface and shot them,” explained Pedro Cortes, secretary of community security in the city of Irapuato.

“We have reviews that the (armed) subjects found its way to a red vehicle, no further information is known. The preliminary report we have is of 24 dead people and seven harmed,” he added.

Authorities will work on seeking the vehicle, Cortes said.

Irapuato is situated northwest of Mexico City in Guanajuato, a state plagued by organized criminal offense and violence, which is also home to sector and several major auto manufacturing crops.

This, combined with state’s significant energy sector, possess attracted groups including the powerful Jalisco New Era and Santa Rosa de Lima drug cartels, which happen to be also involved in extortion, kidnapping and fuel theft.

On June 21 Mexican authorities announced the arrest of 26 alleged customers of Santa Rosa de Lima after burning up cars were used as blockades in the locations of Celaya, Salamanca and Villagran.

Following the violent show President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that his government wouldn't normally permit the country “to fall in to anarchy and disorder.”

Just days before, 6 participants of a family, including a minor, were reported murdered in Celaya.
