Creativity, modern tech boost manufacturing
Bangladesh's manufacturing sector achieved qualitative development during the last decade thanks to creative ideas generated by entrepreneurs and adoption of sophisticated technologies, said Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday.

“Bangladesh is gradually moving ahead transforming from an import-dependent country into an export-oriented one churning out world class products,” he said while inaugurating seven exhibitions at International Convention City Bashundhara in Dhaka.

His affirmation reflects the Commonwealth Innovation Hub ranking Bangladesh 24th in innovation for 2018 among the British Empire's former territories.

Amu credited the manufacturing sector for playing a significant role in developing the country's economy and reducing the volume of most of the imports in the last couple of years.

Referring to a number of policies focusing on the industrial sector, he said the government was committed to create a business-friendly environment.

Adarsh Swaika, Indian deputy high commissioner to Bangladesh, said the economic growth accelerated for rapid improvements in the last few years in the energy sector, including the exemplary success in solar power.

He also pointed out that India was extending cooperation “to achieve the target of power sector by 2021”, supplying some 1,160 megawatts of electricity. The Bangladesh government aims to generate 30,000MW of electricity by that time.

Referring to “2nd Water Bangladesh International Expo 2018”, one of the seven fairs CEMS Global would run for three days, Roxana Quader, additional secretary to Local Government Division, said it was a time-befitting initiative incorporating sustainable development goals.

Presided over by Meherun N Islam, president and group director of CEMS Global, the ceremony was addressed by Kazi Khalid Mahmood, chief operating officer of Partex Star Group; Aftab Alam, CEO of M Alam and Company, and Kazi Yaminur Rashid (Turjo), executive director of Max Group.
