Brahmanbaria trains collision kills 15
At least 15 passengers were killed and over 100 others injured in a collision between two intercity trains in Mandobag area under Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria early Tuesday.
A Dhaka-bound train of 'Turna Nishita Express' collided head-on with a Chattogram-bound 'Udayan Express' around 3am, leaving nine dead on the scene and many others injured, said Deputy Commissioner of the district Hayat-ud-Dawla.
Of the wounded, two died at Sadar Hospital, three in Kasba Upazila Health Complex and one at Cumilla Sadar Hospital, he said.
The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.
Members of Fire Service and Civil Defence from Brahmanbaria Sadar, Akhaura and Kasba rushed to the spot and conducting the rescue operation till filing of this report around 9:18am.
Akhaura Railway Police Station OC Shyamol Kanti Das said the death toll may rise as many people are still trapped.
Chattogram's rail communication with Dhaka and Sylhet remained suspended following the fatal accident.
The DC assumed that the Turna Nishita entered the rail line defying signal and hit the Udayan Express.
