Bangladesh moves up 3 notches in Human Development Index
Bangladesh climbed three spots to rank at 136 among 189 countries in the latest human development index (HDI), released by the United Nations Development Programme.
Within South Asia, Bangladesh's HDI value is fixed at average of 0.608 for the region, with India and Pakistan being ranked 130 and 150 respectively, for the year 2017.
In 2016, Bangladesh's HDI value of 0.579 put it at 138 rank.
Human Development Indices and Indicators (2018 Statistical update) of Bangladesh are given below:
*Life expectancy at birth: 72.8 years
*Expected years of schooling: 11.4 years
*Mean years of schooling 5.8 years
*Gross national income or GNI per capita $ 3,677
The HDI is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.
Human Development Report (HDR) released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Friday (Sept 14).
Norway retained its number 1 ranking followed by Switzerland, Australia, Ireland and Germany. At the bottom of list is Niger at 189, three other African countries and one from Asia.
