Artist Shahabuddin's 69th birthday celebrated
The 69th birthday of Bangladeshi artist and freedom fighter Shahabuddin Ahmed has been celebrated with befitted manner on September 11, reports bdnews24.com.
Artists, literary personalities, journalists, cultural activists, freedom fighters, writers, and political activists gathered at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to celebrate the birthday in Dhaka on Tuesday. The event, presided over by National Professor Anisuzzaman, was also attended by Speaker Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.
Shahabuddin, born in Raipur in Narsingdi in 1950, is famous worldwide. The artist, who fought Bangladesh's independence war, has won the highest civilian award Swadhinata Padak (Independence Award). He now lives in Paris and has also been honored with the highest civilian award of France.
The freedom-fighter artist has been honoured by France with the 'Chevalier de I'Ordre des Arts at des Lettres', known as the Knight in the Order of the Arts and Literature. Speaking at the function, the speaker said, "Artist Shahabuddin is our pride. The eminent freedom fighter has not only highlighted the war of independence in his consciousness, but in the canvas before the world."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the artist.
"Artist Shahabuddin is our honor and pride. He has introduced Bangladesh to the world," he said. A documentary by Indian journalist Ajoy Roy was screened at the event. A cultural program was also held to celebrate the birthday.
Over the last three decades, his remarkable body of work has been extensively exhibited around the world. His distinctive style, depicting a blend of Oriental and Occidental art forms, has made him a prominent name among European art lovers.
His mastery led him to receive the honor of being one of the "50 Master Painters of Contemporary Arts" at the Olympiad of Arts, Barcelona, in 1992.
