AL takes lead in Barishal, BNP in Sylhet
The Awami League mayoral candidates took lead in Barishal city while the BNP contestant in Sylhet in the counting of votes in the elections to the city corporations on Monday, reports UNB.
In Sylhet, BNP candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury bagged 79,540 votes in 117 centres out of total 134 while AL's Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran got 76,335.
In Barishal, AL candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah got 99,105 votes while Mujibur Rahman Sarwar of BNP 12,083 in 99 centres out of total 123.
Earlier, voting in the elections to Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet city corporations ended amid election boycott, allegations of rigging, ouster of polling agents and other irregularities.
In Rajshahi, AL-supported mayor candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton emerged winner by getting 1,66,394 votes while his opponent BNP-backed candidate Mohammad Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul got 78,492 votes.
