94th Academy Awards delayed by per month as pandemic rules extended
The Oscars have been postponed for another consecutive year, and relaxed eligibility rules allowing films to skip concert halls will be kept set up as a result of pandemic, the Academy said Thursday. The 94th Academy Awards will today take place on March 27, 2022, accurately a month later than at first planned, and so are set to go back to their traditional venue at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. Traditionally the Academy of FILM Arts and Sciences requires at least a seven-day run in LA theaters for films to qualify for Hollywood's biggest prize.
With big screens closed, those guidelines were relaxed this past year, in what was widely regarded as a boost for films on streaming platforms. Movies unveiled at theaters in five important cities outside LA will remain eligible, and the adjustments are set to become extended into the pursuing year's Oscars, and potentially beyond.
However, with US concert halls now mainly reopened and film development accelerating again, last year's decision to increase the calendar window in which films could be released and even now qualify for Oscars will not be repeated. Films wishing to contend for next year's Oscars should be released by December 31.
