5 to die in Laldighi massacre case
A court in Chattogram on Monday awarded five people capital punishment in Laldighi Maidan massacre in 1988. 

Chattogram District and Sessions Judge Ismail Hossain handed down the verdict in the afternoon.

The convicts are: Mamtaj Uddin,  Mostafizur Rahman, Pradip Barua, Gopal Chandra Mandal and  Abdullah. They all were police members. 

Of them, Gopal Chandra  is on the run while the rest are behind the bar.

On January 24, 1988, police opened fire on a motorcade of Awami League chief and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina near Laldighi Maidan during the regime of military dictator HM Ershad that left 24 people dead and over 200 injured.
