The suspended trio were- Sifat Ullah, a resident of DU Surya Sen Hall and student of women and gender studies department, Md Al Imran, a student of Institute of Education Research and an executive member of Surya Sen Hall BCL unit, and Mahmudur Rahman, a student of Institute of Modern Language of DU. All were first year students.

Earlier on Saturday evening, members of Bangladesh Chhatra League beat up two students, one of them female, of Economics Department of Dhaka University in front of Surya Sen Hall for roaming here holding hands.

A group of 10 to 12 youths wanted to know their identity when the two classmates, holding hands, were standing at Mall Chattar to get a rickshaw.

Eye-witnesses said the students showed their ID cards, but when the male student wanted to know the reason behind the questioning, the group of BCL beat them up.

Following the incident, the attackers entered the Surya Sen Hall. The victims followed them to know why they were beaten but ended up being attacked for a second time.

A three-member committee has been formed by the Surya Sen hall authorities to probe the incident.

Contacted, BCL Surya Sen Hall unit president Golam Sarwar said that finding the students (victims) in an “objectionable state”, the hall students wanted to know their identities, which led to the scuffle at one stage.
