The Criminal Investigation Department (CID)  through DNA tests has identified 11 victims, out of 19, burnt beyond recognition in the devastating fire in city's Chawkbazar.

Of the victims, nine are males and two females. The females are: Nasrin Jahan and Fatema Johura.

"But, details about the nine male victims could not be known yet. The investigation officer concerned will inform about them later after getting DNA tests results," said CID's Additional DIG Rezaul Haider at its Malibagh office on Wednesday.

"Bodies of 67 victims of the chawkbazar fire have been recovered.Of these, 19 were unidentified. The number of unidentified body rose to 20 as we collected DNA samples from a severed hand later," he said.

DNA samples from 48 persons, who claimed 20 bodies, were collected till March 5, said the Additioal DIG, adding that DNA samples of 23 persons matched with 11 victims in the first phase examination.

"It will take nearly two weeks to identify the remaining victims," the CID officer said.

Replying to a question, Rezaul Haider said, "A case has been filed with Chawkbazar police. We sent the report to the investigation officer of the police station concerned.The officer will hand over the bodies with the court's permission." he added. 

A deadly fire killed at least 71 people at Chawkbazar, in old part of Dhaka, on February 20.
