Awami League Joint Basic Secretary and Info Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud Hasan said Ziaur Rahman had worked as Pakistani collaborator and a good Pakistani army officer then wrote a good letter to Zia praising his purpose in the Liberation Battle.

“Ziaur Rahman rehabilitated those who sided with Pakistan against Bangladesh. He (Zia) built Shah Azizur Rahman as prime minister who lobbied to the US as deputy head of Pakistan and gave scope to do politics to the war criminals,” he informed a dialogue at Bangladesh Betar in the city’s Agargaon on Saturday.

“In guise of a freedom fighter, he, found in true feeling acted as an ally of Pakistan. The ultimate decision to cancel his name is not made but,” Hasan said.

Bangladesh Betar organised the debate and rally marking the World Radio Moment with the theme ‘New World New Radio’.

State Minister for Information Dr Murad Hasan and Information Secretary Khaja Mia addressed the debate as special friends with Bangladesh Betar Director Basic Ahmed Kamruzzaman found in the chair.

The minister said MA Hannan, the then president of Chittagong Awami Group, read out the Declaration of Independence given by Father of the country Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Kalurghat Betar Kendra on March 26, 1971.

“Later, on March 27, 1971, the after that Awami Group leaders wanted a great army officer would read out the declaration. Major Rafique was contacted initial but he was busy in the battlefield. Later on, Key Ziaur Rahman, who was simply on his way to Patiya after crossing Kalurghat, was given the task of studying the proclamation,” he added.

The minister said initially he (Ziaur Rahman) read out the declaration wrongly. After, he read out it correctly on behalf of Bangabandhu, Hasan explained, adding that it's needed to let the new technology know the real history.

He said Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra had also played a significant role in the nation building activities found in the post-independent era.
