Water transport workers go on indefinite strike
Water transport workers have announced to be on an indefinite strike across the country from Monday midnight to press home their 11-point demand.
Eight organizations under Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation called the strike, said Chattogram district unit Nou Sramik Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad vice president Md Nabi Alam.
The strike begins at 12:01 midnight, he added.
The 11-point demands include steps to avoid extortion and robbery in vessels and waterways, full implementation of wage scale 2016, food allowance and landing pass for India-bound workers, food and sea allowance for all waterways workers, re-issuance of endorse, in-charge, technical allowances, Tk 10 lakh as compensation for the groups of the employees in the incident of death at the workplace, issuance of appointment letter, identity card and service book by transport owners, setting buoys, beacons, marks and lights for safe navigation, distribution and renewal procedure for certificates of masters and other workers, stopping irregularities and harassment of employees by Department of Shipping and ensuring social safety of waterways workers.
