VNSC governing body chief seeks apology,‘ready’ to resign
Viqarunnisa Noon School and College Governing Board President Golam Ashraf Talukdar has appeared before the media to beg forgiveness for the suicide of student Aritry Adhikary.
He added that he was ready to resign if necessary.
“If necessary I will resign for the greater good of the institution,” he told journalists on Thursday as students continued demonstrations over the death of the class nine student, reports bdnews24.com.
The students had pressed for a six-point list of demands during their strike. They said on Thursday that they would take their examinations if all the members of the governing body agreed to resign and begged Aritry’s parents for forgiveness. The protests would continue if the demands were not met.
Students gathered at the school’s main gate around 9:30am on Thursday, as they had the previous two days. Some guardians joined the protests. They chanted slogans and waved banners and placards.
Golam Ashraf Talukdar spoke to the media at 1:30pm inside the school gates.
“The first four of the students’ demands are either being implemented or will require more time,” he said. “As we have said before, we are shocked by the Aritry incident. On behalf of the governing body, we beg forgiveness.”
Asked about possible resignations, he said:
“The matter of the resignations will be brought up at the governing body meeting. The decision to resign is a personal matter for the members.”
Asked about his own stance on resignations, he said he was ‘willing to do so for the greater good of the institution’.
The governing body will meet to appoint an acting principal and ensure the school and college will resume regular activities within the next few days, he said.
