UK in first stages of third wave: scientist
There are signs the UK is in the early stages of a third wave of corona virus infections, a scientist advising the federal government has said. Prof Ravi Gupta, from the University of Cambridge, said although latest cases were "comparatively low" the Indian variant got caused "exponential expansion". He said ending Covid constraints in England on 21 June should be postponed.
Environment Secretary George Eustice said the federal government could not rule out a good delay to the planned lockdown easing. On Sunday, the UK reported a lot more than 3,000 new Covid attacks for a 5th successive day. Ahead of this, the UK had not surpassed that amount since 12 April.
Asked upon BBC Radio 4's Today program if the UK had been in a third wave of attacks, Prof Gupta said: "Yes, there has been exponential development in the number of the new cases and by least three-quarters of them are the fresh (Indian) variant. "Of course the amounts of cases are comparatively low right now - all waves focus on low numbers of cases that grumble in the background and then become explosive.
so the key here's that what we are seeing here is the signs of an early wave." However, he said the number of people who've been vaccinated in the UK meant this wave would probably take much longer to emerge than previous ones. "There could be a false feeling of security for quite a while, and that is our concern."
