Turkish court gives 92 life sentences in 2016 coup trial
A Turkish court sentenced 92 defendants including former high-ranking army officials alive in jail on Wednesday for his or her roles in the 2016 attempted coup, state-owned Anadolu information agency reported.
More than 250 people were killed found in the attempt to overthrow the federal government on July 15, 2016 when rogue soldiers commandeered warplanes, helicopters and tanks and sought to take control of key state institutions.
Lifestyle sentences without parole received to 12 defendants including some section heads of the land forces, Anadolu said.Previous month, a court handed different jail sentences to leaders of the coup attempt, which Ankara blamed in supporters of the U.S.-structured Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen. He possesses denied having any function.
Some 292,000 people have already been detained over alleged links to Gulen, practically 100,000 of them jailed pending trial, Anadolu cited Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu as saying.
Some 150,000 civil servants were sacked or suspended following the attempted coup. Courts possess handed down more than 2,500 lifestyle sentences and the defence ministry explained 20,833 people had been expelled from the military.
