Syria intercepts Israeli missiles above Damascus: state media
Israel launched missile strikes against more than a few targets in close proximity to Damascus, prompting the activation of weather defences, Syrian condition media said early Mon.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has routinely carried out raids in Syria, usually targeting Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah forces and government troops.
Soon after midnight, “the Israeli enemy launched an assault, firing missiles from the occupied Golan and Galilee,” the SANA news agency reported, citing a military source.
The strikes were targeted at targets near Damascus, the source said, adding that defences shot down “virtually all” of the missiles.
In line with the Syrian Observatory meant for Human Rights, Israeli strikes upon eastern Syria killed 57 federal government and allied fighters in January 13.
The Observatory is a Britain-based monitor that depends on sources on the floor in Syria because of its reports.
Israel rarely confirms strikes in Syria, however the army said it hit about 50 targets in the war-torn country in 2020, without providing facts.
It has consistently vowed to avoid its arch-enemy Iran from gaining a foothold found in Syria, where Tehran has backed President Bashar al-Assad through the entire nearly decade-long war.
