Swiggy off the hook in complaint of fleecing customers
YOUR COMPETITION Commission has removed a complaint of unfair business practices against Swiggy. The ruling came on a complaint that alleged Swiggy charges unreasonable and unfair prices from the clients.

The informants had complained that Swiggy typically charges a commission on the full total order bill amount, including GST, from partner restaurants.

Swiggy charges delivery payment from customers, which generally ranges from Rs 20- 100. At times, in addition, it charges more predicated on a surge in delivery rates in times of high demand, rains, special situations and midnight delivery.

That they had also claimed that the costs charged by Swiggy through its website or iphone app are much higher compared to the rates offered by the respective eating places in their outlets, in addition to the delivery charges.

The complaint claimed that customers are generally unaware of the rates charged by of a specific restaurant in offline mode and therefore, cannot compare it with the rates displayed on Swiggy’s platform.

In addition, it said Swiggy is charging prices higher than the costs charged by the respective eating places for walk-in customers, without the data of customers.

The complainant mentioned that Swiggy is India’s most significant food-delivery platform.

On the allegations, Swiggy submitted that it just operates as an intermediary and the costs displayed on the system are immediately uploaded by its partner eating places as your choice on pricing solely rest with them and Swiggy does not have any direct or indirect part to influence the costs on its platform.

Regarding dominance, Swiggy has claimed that it is not dominant in the relevant marketplace.

Considering the submissions of Swiggy, your competition Commission of India (CCI) said that allegations against Swiggy do not appear to be substantiated.

Concerning Swiggy’s submission that discrepancy in the rates is attributable to the partner eating places rather than to it, CCI explained “it could be apposite to get Swiggy to give satisfactory disclosures on its program that it is not involved with fixation of selling price of the goods/menus of the eating places on its platform, in order to allay misgivings, in the event any, in the minds of any stakeholders like the consumers.”
