Shortage of new local films
So far, no local films have been released in 2019. Dearth of new films has become a cause of concern for cinema owners and cinema owners are finding it difficult to run their cinemas with acute shortage of local films. One Indian Bangla film, Jaya-starrer 'Bisarjan', was released on January 4 under the film exchange program of SAFTA, but could not attract viewers.

'The industry is suffering from shortage of local films. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the cinema owners to keep their cinemas in operation,' said Mia Alauddin, vice-president of Bangladesh Film Exhibitors' Association. Some cinema owners are running old films, while others have closed their cinemas for the time being.

Popular cinema Madhumita, for example, is running some old popular films. The cinema will screen seven popular yesteryear films from January 18 to 24.

'We are suffering from lack of new films severely. We have, therefore, decided to screen some yesteryear films to keep the cinema in operation,' said Iftekharuddin Nawshad, president of Bangladesh Film Exhibitors' Association and owner of Madhumita.

The cinema will screen 'Nishan', 'Sujan Sakhi', 'Chawa Theke Pawa', 'Durdesh', 'Miss Lanka', 'Ek Mutho Bhat' and 'Nacher Putul'.
