Savar high-rise building catches fire
A fire broke out at a high-rise residential cum commercial building on Thana Road in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire services and civil defence sources said the fire originated from an electric short-circuit in the basement of the 12-storey 'Bismillah Shopping Tower' at about 2pm.
On information, two units of firefighters from Savar rushed in and tried to douse the flame.
Later, six more units from DEPZ, Dhamrai and Kalyanpur joined them to put out the blaze that took an hour.
However, no casualty was reported in the incident as the residents have been evacuated.
But, a number of cars and electric materials in the basement were gutted by the fire.
Local MP Dr Enamur Rahman, Savar UNO Sheikh Russel Hasan and high police officials visited the spot.
Meanwhile, flat owners association's leaders blamed the negligence of the developer company 'Find Desh Development' for the fire.
They alleged the company did not set up a power sub-station in the building despite repeated request.
Our correspondent could not reach Find Desh Development's vice chairman Yusuf Chowdhury for his allegation.
