Presidential election likely on Feb 19

DHAKA: Election Commission (EC) has started preparation to hold the presidential election on February 19, said Law Minister Anisul Huq Monday (January 22).

The parliament will elect the president of Bangladesh through voting at the 19th session of Jatiya Sangsad. 

The tenure of incumbent president of Md Abdul Hamid will expire on April 23. He assumed office on April 23, 2013.

As per the constitution, presidential election should be held within the last 90 to 60 days of the incumbent president’s tenure, which means the next election will have to hold between January 24 and February 23. 

The Election Commission (EC) is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday (January 25) to discuss the necessities on arranging the polls to elect the 21st president of Bangladesh, senior election commissioner Mahbub Talukder told Banglanews. 

However, as per the law, a person can serve for maximum two times as the head of the state. Incumbent president Md Abdul Hamid is serving his first tenure.
