Northern Italy to 'quarantine 16 million people'
Italy is defined to lock straight down at least 16 million people around Lombardy and in 11 other provinces in the north and east of the united states.

The mandatory quarantine will last until early April.

The dramatic escalation in the country's efforts to support the latest deadly coronavirus will close gyms, pools, museums and ski resorts.

Italy is Europe's worst-hit country and reported a steep climb in virus infections on Saturday.

The new measures, which also connect with financial centre Milan and tourist hotspot Venice, could take effect as soon as Sunday and will previous until 3 April.

The death toll in Italy has passed 230, with officials reporting a lot more than 50 deaths in a day. The amount of confirmed cases jumped by more than 1,200 to 5,883 on Saturday.

The measures published in a draft government decree were obtained by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

They are set to be signed in the coming hours, reports the BBC's Mark Lowen.

The complete northern region of Lombardy, real estate to 10 million people and Italy's financial centre Milan, will be closed off except to emergency access, and 11 provinces including Venice, Parma and Modena will be afflicted - a complete of 16 million people.

Until now around 50,000 persons in northern Italy had been afflicted by quarantine measures.

Night clubs, gyms, pools, museums and ski resorts can be closed.

Restaurants and cafes may open but customers must sit at least a metre apart.

People will be told to stay home as much as possible, and those who break the quarantine could face three months in jail.

Sports competitions will near to the general public, and the president of Italy's soccer players' union has needed all football to avoid.

The World Health Group has advised Italy to strongly give attention to virus containment measures as infections spread in the united states.

The plans echo China's forced quarantine of millions of people that your WHO has praised for halting the distributed of the virus.

Leading Italian politician Nicola Zingaretti explained on Saturday he had tested great for the virus.

"I am fine but I will have to stay residence for another few days," the first choice of Italy's centre-still left Democratic Party (PD) said in a Facebook content.
