NBR freezes bank account of Robi over tax dodging
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday asked banks to freeze accounts of mobile phone operator Robi for three working days on charge of dodging around Tk 19 crore in Value Added Tax (VAT) and supplementary duties, reports BSS.
The NBR's Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) sent letters to chief executives of all banks asking them to freeze accounts of Robi for the next three workdays.
"We've given the banks this letter to freeze Robi's accounts as a preliminary measure because the mobile phone operator has been given letter several times earlier for the clearing the evaded VAT and supplementary duties but it did not pay the money," said LTU commissioner Md Matiur Rahman.
Talking to BSS, he said the NBR will take tough steps against Robi if it does not pay the dodged VAT and supplementary duties within the next three working days.
According to the NBR, the LTU constituted a team headed by one of its additional commissioners as per the section 26 of the Value Added Tax Act, 1991. This team visited Robi's corporate office in Dhaka's Gulshan on February 7 and collected documents including its trial balance, summary of site and space rental, summary of SIM sales and summary of invoice to BTCL of 2017.
The tram analyzed the documents and found that the company dodged Tk 18, 72, 88, 032.70 as unpaid VAT and supplementary duties, according to a press release of NBR.
