The Holy Ramadan, the lunar month of self-purification through fasting and abstinence, commences in the country from this evening as the brand new moon was sighted in Bangladesh sky today (April 24).
The National Moon Sighting Committee took your choice at a gathering held at Islamic Foundation's Baitul Mukarram office with Religious Affairs Secretary Nurul Islam in the chair.
Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk through the lunar month, a period of restraint and austerity.
Fasting during Ramadan is probably the five obligatory pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, twelve-monthly charity -- known as "zakat" -- and performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
This season, maximum 12 people, including two imams, can attend Tarabi prayers in mosques each through the holy month of Ramadan.
The step was taken up to avoid the transmission of fast-spreading coronavirus.
