Mexican governor says poor are 'immune' to coronavirus
The governor of a state in central Mexico is arguing that the indegent are "immune" to the brand new coronavirus, even as the government suspends all nonessential government activities beginning Thursday in a bid to avoid the spread of the virus.
Puebla Gov. Miguel Barbosa's comment Wednesday was evidently partly a response to indications that the wealthy own made up a substantial percentage of Mexicans contaminated to day, including some prominent organization executives.
Officials say three-quarters of Mexico's 475 confirmed cases are related to international travelling, and the poor usually do not make many international outings. Some people apparently captured the virus on ski trips to Italy or america. The country has viewed six deaths up to now.
"The majority is wealthy people. When you are abundant, you are at risk. For anyone who is poor, no," Barbosa said of the coronavirus. "We the indegent, we are immune."
Barbosa also appeared to be playing on a vintage stereotype held by some Mexicans that poor sanitation requirements may perhaps have strengthened their immune systems by exposing them to bacteria or perhaps other bugs.
There is absolutely no scientific evidence to suggest the poor are at all immune to the virus that's causing COVID-19 disease around the world.
For many people, the oronavirus causes gentle or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that get rid of in 2-3 weeks. For some, especially older parents and persons with existing health issues, it could cause more severe condition, including pneumonia and loss of life.
Some are acquiring the pandemic more seriously.
On Wednesday, deputy wellness secretary Hugo López-Gatell announced that "beginning tomorrow, the government will suspend all its actions, but there are crucial activities that can't be suspended."
He mentioned hospitals, fuel creation, electrical energy, public sanitation and law enforcement within the essential services that will not be suspended.
