Media reports on Jisan’s release baseless: Home Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday trashed media reports that criminal Jisan was released from Dubai jail, saying initiatives have been taken to bring him back.
He made the comment while replying to a journalist’s question at Probarona Purnima programme, the second largest festival of the Buddhists, at Merul Badda International Buddhist Monastery, UNB reports.
He said media reports on Jisan’s release are baseless. “All sorts of efforts are being made to bring him home,” Asaduzzaman said.
Jisan was arrested in Dubai on October 2 in a joint initiative of the National Central Bureau (NCB) unit at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters and the NCB Dubai.
Dhaka had announced a Tk 15 lakh reward for information on 23 notorious criminals, including Jisan, on December 27, 2001.
His name came up again after the killing of two Detective Branch officials at a residential hotel in Malibagh in 2003.
Jisan fled to India two years later and eventually went to Dubai after managing an Indian Passport. He changed his name to Ali Akbar Chowdhury. Interpol issued a red alert in his name.
His name cropped up again after the arrest of Jubo League leaders GK Shamim and Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan last month during an anti-corruption drive.
