Mass detentions after Putin critic Navalny jailed
Nearly 1,400 persons were detained in Russia during Tuesday's protests in support of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny, rights monitors say.

In Moscow, riot police were filmed beating demonstrators with batons.

Mr Navalny, 44, was previous jailed for three-and-a-one half years for violating the conditions of a suspended sentence. He says the circumstance was fabricated.

He returned to Russia in January after appearing treated in Germany for a near-fatal nerve agent attack previous August.

Mr Navalny says Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the attack with the Novichok agent, describing him while a good "poisoner". The Kremlin denies the allegation.

The EU, the US and the UK have all condemned Tuesday's court verdict, demanding the opposition innovator be immediately released.

A huge selection of protesters gathered in central Moscow following the court's decision.

Soon there have been violent scenes in the administrative centre, with training video on social mass media showing law enforcement beating and arresting those that came out to aid Mr Navalny. One journalist was viewed being strike on the top with a baton by a officer.

Russia's OVD-Info man rights monitors said 1,116 persons were detained on Tuesday found in Moscow, and 246 found in St Petersburg, the country's second-largest city.

Another 15 people were held in small Russian cities.

The authorities have not commented on the reported quantities.

Previous month, thousands of folks have been detained during two days of protests in the united states.
