Locals get no damages for Tengratila explosions
Local people are yet to be compensated by the concerned authorities for the damages caused by the deadly explosions at Tengratila gas field.
Two explosions rocked the area on January 7 and June 24 in 2005, destroying the gas reserve and damaging adjacent areas of Azabpur, Girisnagar, Koiyajuri, Tengrabazar and Shantipur, reports UNB.
The location has since been abandoned but gas is still leaking in nearby villages, increasing risks of a deadly accident.
Most locals still suffer from various diseases related to breathing difficulties.
Tengratila Dabi Aday Songram Parishad chief Nurul Amin said: "It is impossible to recover from the damage inflicted by Canadian Company Niko. Even now, in the rainy season, gas leakage can be seen over a one kilometer area."
Niko eventually left Tengratila after securing insurance money from Singapore.
Locals said none of the victims were given any compensation.
Two years ago, the then state minister for power Nasrul Hamid visited the spot and promised to stand by the victims. There has been no visible government initiative to ensure that the people got damages, locals claimed.
