'Kinu Kaharer Thetar': A satire of political leadership
After being showcased in 8th Theater Olympic in Delhi and Bhopal, India, theater troupe Prachyanat's much acclaimed production 'Kinu Kaharer Thetar' won thousands of theater lover's heart. Now the troupe is going to stage its 15th production at the National Theater Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital today at 7pm.
Written by Manaj Mitra and directed by Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon, 'Kinu Kaharer Thetar' revolves around an imaginary kingdom, Putna, which is ruled by an autocratic king. The play goes forward with several humorous incidents and ultimately unveils a crucial truth. The prime minister of the kingdom molests a woman.
So, the English Lord issues an order, "If the woman doesn't get justice I will toss the throne". The king falls in a tough trouble as the minister is his closest mate and he depends on him very much. So the king advises him to falsely fix a man who will admit the crime as his own deed and take the punishment instead of the minister.
So, a lazy man, namely Ghantakarna becomes the 'criminal' and in return his wife Jagadambha takes four bags of money from the king. Soon, name and fame of Ghantakarna spreads all around the kingdom and all the thieves, dacoits and criminals start hiring him to take over their punishments.
'Kinu Kaharer Thetar' is a vastly discussed play of Monoj Mitra. Many groups in Bangladesh have staged the play before, audience also have taken it with pleasure. Monoj Mitra's plays are always unique for his story and dialogue manners. He brings us forth to the hardcore truth through humor.
The play is a satirical play, where Putna kingdom depicts Bangladesh. The king, governor general, minister of state, Ghontakarna reminds us of the government, opposition, judiciary systems and the common people.
