In Canada, Montreal techniques to make masks obligatory in public areas
The Canadian city of Montreal, among the country’s virus hotspots, can make wearing face masks in indoor public places mandatory in the coming weeks, Mayor Valerie Plante said Mon.

Montreal, Canada’s second-largest metropolis, follows in the footsteps of Toronto and the capital Ottawa, where masks will be obligatory from Tuesday.

Plante said the approach, to come into effect from July 27, was first found in response to the “emergence of some outbreaks found in the suburbs… that could undermine the attempts we've been making since the beginning of this pandemic.”

The measure will apply to shops, sports facilities, bars and restaurants, she said.

Last week, Quebec’s provincial government reported masks would be mandatory on general public transport from July 13.

Plante said that some companies had struggled “in making certain the guidelines of hygiene and distancing are actually respected within their establishments.”

“For most, a loosening resulting in eventual reconfinement would simply mean putting the main element under the door,” she explained in a statement.

“A setback will be a disaster for human being lives and for our market.”

Plante said there will be a grace period as a result everyone could possibly be prepared, but warned that she'd not hesitate to “crack down on offenders over time.”

Quebec accounts for over fifty percent of Canada’s roughly 105,000 coronavirus conditions, and practically two-thirds of the 8,700 deaths - almost all of them in the higher Montreal area.
