Humayun Ahmed's 'Devi' thrills audience
Popular theater troupe Bahubachan staged the 111th show of its much-acclaimed production 'Devi' yesterday at 7pm at the Experimental Theater Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segun Bagicha of the capital. The play has been an adaptation of Humayun Ahmed's popular novel with the same title, by Iqbal Hossain.
The play is directed by Arham Alo and dramatised by Iqbal Hossain. Devi is the 22nd production of the troupe. Bahubachan was founded in 1971. Through depiction of a number of supernatural incidents, the play zooms in on an interesting theme - contradiction between the conscious and the subconscious of the human mind.
The plot of the play revolves around Ranu, a young woman, and Misir Ali, one of the most widely found fictional characters of Humayun Ahmed. Psychologist Misir Ali explains his patient Ranu's belief of the existence of a 'goddess' within herself as a hallucination.
However, a few incidents such as the rescue of a girl named Nilu from her abductor Ahmed Baset cannot be explained with any scientific theory.
The cast of the play included Dipa, Rina, Tomal, Mohiuddin Selim and Arham Alo to name a few. Ashok Mukharjee was in light design while Arham Alo was in set design.
