Grameen Phone official among 2 held for illegal SIM registration
Rapid Action battalion (RAB) members have detained Grameen Phone's senior executive (Business Sales) Syed Tanvirur Rahman and another one from the capital's Mirpur area in connection with illegal SIM registration.
The other detainee is Toufiq Hossain Khan alias Polash, 38 .
Huge quantum of SIM cards have also been recovered from their possessions during the drive on Saturday.
Additional DIG Chowdhury Monjurul Karim informed this at a press conference held at RAB media centre in city's Karwan Bazar on Sunday.
Chowdhury said number of crimes including demanding money and giving threat from different gangs using illegal numbers had come down to a great extent after the SIM re-registration in biometric system.
But, recently RAB-4 carried out an investigation on receiving some allegations of demanding money and threat through phone calls.
During the investigation, the elite force came to know that some officials of a distribution house and a section of unscrupulous officials of Grameen Phone have engaged in selling SIM cards after completing registration illegally.
Later, on September 19, a foreign national filed a general diary with Bhasantek police alleging that a person named Mamun called him from a Grameen Phone number and demanded money from him. The caller also threatened him to death if the money was not given.
Following investigation, a team of RAB-4 conducted a drive and detained the duo for interrogation.
Later on Saturday night, a case was filed in this connection and they were shown arrested in the case.
During the period of June 9-11 this year, 867 SIM cards have been activated for 42 companies without their consent. Tanvirur Rahman supervised the whole process with the help of the distribution house, said Chowdhury.
