Four ships being purchased with Chinese loans at 50% higher cost
A perusal of the project documents shows that the cost of a mother bulk vessel is currently 780 crore taka in Bangladeshi currency. When the negotiations first started, the price of the same vessel was pegged at Rs 520 crore. On the other hand, the cost of crude oil mother tanker is 462 million dollars. Earlier its price was 308 million dollars. Now an additional 50 percent has to be paid to buy such ships.

The manufacturer, China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation, was represented at each stage of the negotiations. The representatives of this company said that they could not ship at the previous price because, the dollar and various equipment prices increase. China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation did everything including designing and measuring the ships.

Tenders are not invited against Chinese loans. This is a supply loan, so after the commercial loan agreement, the shipbuilding work order will be given directly to China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation. By 2026, four ships will be made and handed over to Bangladesh.

Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Executive Director of Policy Research Institute (PRI) raised questions about the purchase of ships and said that the rent of ships has come down to 1/10th compared to before. No need to buy new ships, he further said. Apart from this, there are 93 private sector sea going ships in the country. Adding four ships to the government sector will not change much, Dr. Ahsan H Mansur added.
