ETC slams new UK travel measures
The European Travel Commission (ETC) strongly condemns the brand new tough enforcement actions for travellers announced by the UK government. As well as introducing two mandatory testing after arrival and obligatory 'quarantine packages' for travellers from 'reddish list' countries, the brand new rules involve heavy personal penalties and potential jail period for non-compliance.

Travellers arriving from high-risk countries now deal with possible imprisonment as high as a decade for not disclosing the right travel information.

ETC, the association representing the national tourism organisations of the countries of European countries, is calling on the United Kingdom to reconsider these drastic measures urgently. We must put a stop to placing the work of going in the same category as extreme criminal offences.

Following a announcement, Luís Araújo, President, ETC, explained, "Travellers aren't felons and really should not face a couple of legal repercussions designed for arriving back from another country. Throughout this crisis, we've learned that blanket limitations are not the way forward, specifically in countries with currently high degrees of community transmitting. It is crucial to strike a equilibrium between sensible public wellbeing measures and preserving connectivity and citizens' mobility."

"We firmly assume that the procedure of vaccination, assessment on arrival and departure, together with efficient tracing devices and hygiene actions, will safely restore movements between countries. We happen to be calling all the national and overseas organisations in the travelling and tourism sector to firmly condemn these procedures and support alternatives which are universally good for the industry also to worldwide relations," he added.
