DU forms probe body; DUTA, white panel teachers denounce
The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) have formed a five-member committee, headed by Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, to investigate the attack on the Vice Chancellor.
The committee has also been asked to submit its report as soon as possible, said a statement issued on Tuesday night.
The statement alleged that a number of agitating DU students alongwith some outsiders launched the pre-planned attack in the name of demonstration.
“Members of the proctorial team asked the agitators to send a delegation to the VC to discuss the issue but they did not pay any heed, and continued their violent activities, obstructing academic and administrative activities of the university,” the release added.
At one stage, the agitating students barred the VC from joining a meeting of Board of Advanced Studies in front of his office, it said.
VC Prof Akhtaruzzman listened to their demands and assured them of taking steps after probing the incident and following due procedures, but the demonstrators rejected his assurance and continued hurling abusive words, the release said, adding a group of teachers, university staff, officials and members of the proctorial body then rescued the VC by forming a human shield and took him to his office, when the protestors swooped on him.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) has expressed concerned over the unwanted incident alleging that a certain group is trying to make the environment of the educational institutions unstable ahead of the upcoming national election.
In a statement, signed by DUTA president and general secretary Prof ASM Maksud Kamal and Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam respectively, was issued on Wednesday.
Pro-BNP-Jammat white panel teachers also issued separate statement expressing concern over reoccurrence of such violence on the campus.
“Such kinds of incidents these led the campus into a deep crisis that tarnish the university image before national and international level” the statement reads
Condemning BCL attacks on students, the statement said that in the name of suppressing protesters, assault on students and harassing female protestors is not acceptable at all.
Denying the presence of BCL leaders and activists during the rescue of the VC, DU proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said, “There were no BCL men in operation of rescuing the VC from confinement by protestors, rather proctorail team and teachers rescued the VC by creating a human shield.”
“Students came to the authorities seeking punishment to those who assaulted the VC, so we have formed probe committee and to take step as per the probe committee report,” he added.
