Conrad Sangma takes oath as Meghalaya chief minister
National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma was sworn in as Meghalaya chief minister by Governor Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
Eleven other ministers were also sworn in the same day.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP National President Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and many other luminaries.
The Indian state would now be ruled by a coalition government as the NPP won 19 seats. It has forged an alliance with United Democratic Party (UDP) that won six seats, People’s Democratic Front (four 4 seats), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (two seats), Bharatiya Janata Party (2 seats), and independent legislator Samuel Sangma.
The coalition has been dubbed as “Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.”
A couple of days ago, the NPP legislators chose Conrad Sangma as their leader, and letters from the NPP legislators and coalition partners were sent to the Meghalaya governor in this regard.
Led by Sangma, the coalition leaders paid a called on Governor Ganga Prasad on Sunday and staked their claim to form the next government in Meghalaya.
According to official sources, the governor suggested Sangma form the government provided he proves his majority in Legislative Assembly by March 16.
